Is Food Coloring Safe to Eat?

Food coloring is everywhere and sneaks into your food without you even realizing it. It makes food look beautiful and exciting, but does it really hurt you? Are food colorings safe?

Food coloring is made to make eating fun. You’ve seen rainbow cupcakes, every flavor of Skittles imaginable, colorful drinks, and now rainbow bagels. Seeing their color immediately grabs our attention and makes us choose certain foods, even if it’s by the gram.
What we ignore, however, are the dangers associated with consuming food coloring. Many of them are banned in certain countries, especially in Europe. consumption has increased fivefold. They are associated with tumors, chromosomal damage and allergic reactions. When I was a little girl, I came home from school one day and diagnosed myself by telling my mother that every time I ate Froot Loops for breakfast, my whole body would itch. , consisted of various sad birthday parties where we were not allowed to eat candy.Since then, I have suffered from an allergic reaction to food coloring. I’ve gotten used to living with an intolerance. It’s part of who I am now.


Whether or not you are allergic to food coloring like I am, the bottom line is that food coloring is everywhere and we need to be aware of it. The key is to avoid coloring as much as possible. Studies have consistently highlighted the dangers of food coloring, from brain tumors to aggression. I don’t mean…but honestly, who would stop by Ring Pop?

Watching your intake of artificial colors is not as difficult as you might think. Here are some quick tips that have helped me survive a lifetime without food coloring.

  1. Read the food label carefully. This applies to everything, not just food coloring.
  2. Try using natural food coloring. For example, use real strawberries instead of red 40 to make strawberry syrup.
  3. Eat a natural rainbow of colorful fruits and vegetables.
  4. Avoid processed foods (this is a tough question). Look out for pop tarts, mac and cheese, chips, sodas and more.
  5. Choose organic foods without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

Research into the dangers of food coloring continues to this day, and information on the subject is constantly changing. The FDA constantly considers the question, “Are food colors safe?” However, it is our job to understand the pros and cons of consuming food coloring on a daily basis.

Food colors are FDA-approved and “safe” to consume, but be careful as you may be eating highly processed and chemically processed foods.
