Food coloring is everywhere and sneaks into your food without you even realizing it. It makes food look beautiful and exciting, but does it really hurt you? Are food colorings safe?
Food coloring is made to make eating fun. You’ve seen rainbow cupcakes, every flavor of Skittles imaginable, colorful drinks, and now rainbow bagels. Seeing their color immediately grabs our attention and makes us choose certain foods, even if it’s by the gram.

- Try using natural food coloring. For example, use real strawberries instead of red 40 to make strawberry syrup.
- Eat a natural rainbow of colorful fruits and vegetables.
- Avoid processed foods (this is a tough question). Look out for pop tarts, mac and cheese, chips, sodas and more.
- Choose organic foods without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
Research into the dangers of food coloring continues to this day, and information on the subject is constantly changing. The FDA constantly considers the question, “Are food colors safe?” However, it is our job to understand the pros and cons of consuming food coloring on a daily basis.
